Research Interests
Study of the role of astrocytes in neurological disease, with a major emphasis on glutamate transporter regulation in relation to excitotoxicity.

Study of the involvement of these cells in the pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury, vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency, focal cerebral ischemia, hepatic encephalopathy and manganese neurotoxicity using human autopsy material and animal and cell culture models of the disorders.

Established techniques in the laboratory include the use of RT-PCR, real-time PCR, immunoblotting, cerebral microdialysis, HPLC, autoradiography, FACS, and fluorescence-based immunohistochemistry.
